“It is not yet possible to say whether individual items are actually related to the Madeleine McCann case,” said the Braunschweig public prosecutor on Thursday. The items should be evaluated in the coming days.

The three-day search operation was carried out in the area of ​​the Arade reservoir not far from the municipality of Silves in Portugal. According to the public prosecutor’s office, the background was “recent developments”. The action was started at the request of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). According to official information, police officers from Portugal, Germany and Great Britain took part.

The search area is around 50 kilometers north-east of the holiday resort of the seaside resort of Praia da Luz, from which the British girl disappeared without a trace shortly before her fourth birthday on May 3, 2007. The public prosecutor’s office in Braunschweig is investigating a German with a criminal record. Investigators are convinced that the 46-year-old man kidnapped and killed the girl. But a body was never found.
