The head of the Catholic Church spent his third night in the hospital and is doing well, Italian media reported.
The pontiff is still fever-free and receives liquid food, the Holy See said on Friday evening. He prayed in the afternoon and later received the Eucharist. The Vatican had previously announced that the general health of the pontiff was good. His values are stable.
Pope will not say Angelus prayer
Pope Francis will not say the Angelus prayer on Sunday from a balcony of the “Agostino Gemelli” Polyclinic, as was the case after his bowel surgery in July 2021. Doctors advised Francis not to pray.
“We have asked the Pope to spend part of his convalescence in hospital, a decision dictated by prudence. This is to facilitate recovery, everything is going well,” said surgeon Sergio Alfieri, head of the team supporting the Pope had operated. “The Pope will say the prayer in his sickroom; those who wish to join him spiritually in prayer can do so at noon,” Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said. All of the Pope’s appointments after June 18 have been confirmed.
Francis has his own apartment on the tenth floor of Rome’s Gemelli Clinic, which is permanently reserved for him. He was there for the first time in July 2021. The clinic apartment consists of several rooms, a living room, a kitchen and a small private chapel. In addition to the Pope, his employees and those closest to him can stay there.
Because of a so-called laparocele, a hernia in the intestine, the pontiff had to be operated on Wednesday in the Roman Gemelli Clinic. According to the surgeon in charge, he survived the three-hour operation under general anesthesia well and “without complications”.
