More than three-quarters of cities expect global warming threats to intensify, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) organization said on Wednesday. According to this, extreme heat is the most frequently reported danger in the cities cooperating with the CDP. 76 percent of the cities in Europe were affected in 2022.
Of the cities that reported facing significant climate threats, 70 percent are already affected, it said. In addition to extreme heat, the main dangers are flooding (73 percent of cities) and heavy rainfall (60 percent). 2022 was the hottest summer in Europe since weather records began, and southern Europe also had the highest number of hot days. According to the CDP, not only southern European cities such as Barcelona, Athens, Lisbon or Naples are affected – more northern cities such as Stockholm, Copenhagen, Berlin and Warsaw have also reported increasing heat concerns. The elderly, low-income households, children, young people and marginalized communities are those most affected by heat.
The CDP is a non-profit organization founded in London that receives environmental data from a total of 1,090 cities. She conducts research in particular on the subject of climate risks.
