The ship was initially unable to free itself, the Danish military’s Arctic Command said on Tuesday. The “Ocean Explorer” has been lying in a fjord about 1,400 kilometers northeast of the capital Nuuk since Monday, it said.
“The nearest help is far away, our units are far away, and the weather can be very adverse,” said Arctic Command chief Brian Jensen. So far there have been no reports of injuries on board and there is currently no immediate danger to passengers or the environment, he explained.
The closest Arctic Command unit was an inspection ship that was about 1,200 nautical miles (2,220 kilometers) away at the time of the incident, Jensen said. This means that the ship that ran aground could not reach it until Friday morning (local time) at the earliest. The authorities therefore asked a nearby cruise ship to stay where it was. So that you are able to help if the situation changes.
