More than 40 dogs, including puppies just 10 days old, have been rescued from a slaughterhouse in Vietnam. Operator Kieu Viet Hung handed over a total of 44 dogs to an animal shelter on Friday, according to an AFP correspondent’s report. He had previously decided to give up his business in Thái Nguyên, north of Hanoi.

In the past seven years, Hung said he had slaughtered up to 20,000 dogs. “Whenever I killed them, I felt sorry for them,” said the 39-year-old. He now wants to trade in scrap metal and fertilizers instead.

An estimated 5 million dogs are consumed in Vietnam every year – the highest figure after China. Some people believe that eating the meat can ward off bad luck, while others rave about its taste. However, opinions are slowly changing. More and more people, especially in cities, are refusing to eat it; instead, dogs are increasingly being kept as pets.
