The game against Sturm Graz (3:1) began for LASK the way the Cup round of 16 had ended in Kapfenberg: with a penalty saved. On Wednesday, Jörg Siebenhandl’s parade meant promotion, while Tobias Lawal kept a clean sheet in the Bundesliga.
After just 21 seconds, George Bello hugged Bryan Teixeira too tightly in the penalty area, and referee Markus Hameter whistled a penalty. After a three-minute check, Manprit Sarkaria stepped up, Lawal saved the shot, and William Böving used the rebound – but after the goal celebration, the video referee intervened again: Böving had started into the penalty area too early. Because he thereby gained an advantage, the LASK fans suddenly cheered: it continued with a free kick for the athletes.
Lawal prepared the penalty parade with psychological games: he stood there for a long time at the penalty spot, long after shooter Manprit Sarkaria had grabbed the ball. Last week the ÖFB team player missed against Austria. “I reminded him of that,” Lawal said with a smile.
Zulj suspended in the derby
LASK also missed a penalty opportunity when Robert Zulj was denied by Kjell Scherpen (45′). Shortly before, the LASK captain had seen his fifth yellow card – Zulj was therefore suspended for the derby against Blau-Weiß Linz.
