“Food addiction” is the seizure-like consumption of enormous amounts of food, which occurs repeatedly and over a longer period of time as a result of cravings typical of addiction. Parameters include intense desire, loss of control, continuous increase in dosage, development of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms – especially irritability and aggression.
Imaging studies show changes in the brain similar to those seen in addictions to nicotine, alcohol or gambling. “In this case, food does not satisfy hunger, but is used to supposedly increase feelings of happiness,” says Fischer.
