Shortage of general practitioners in Wels: Clinic jumps in “Supply unit” a

For many Wels residents who have lost their family doctor in recent years and have not found a replacement, there is now relief: In cooperation with the state of Upper Austria and the ÖGK, the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic is now opening one at the Wels location “General medicine care unit”. This is intended to partially compensate for the bottleneck. Initially the scope corresponds to one statutory health insurance doctor’s practice, later to that of two. “A team of several doctors, a qualified nurse and ordination assistants looks after Welser patients who currently do not have a family doctor”, explains clinic managing director Dietbert Timmerer. The offer is limited to three years.

This is what the procedure looks like: The care unit only cares for adults with their main residence in Wels who currently do not have a family doctor. Registration is necessary in advance, even in the case of acute illnesses. Unregistered patients will be accepted no later than one hour before the office closes. The offer is intended for general medical services such as the clarification of acute and chronic complaints or illnesses. Preventive examinations are not possible.

The opening times will be gradually expanded: initially, patients will be cared for from Monday to Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and on Monday afternoon from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The second outpatient clinic will also open on December 4th, so that the opening hours can be extended in the afternoon.

State Health Councilor and Deputy State Governor Christine Haberlander (VP) is pleased about the new project: “If the general conditions for the hospitals are right, as in the case of this initiative, this cooperation offers an alternative to care. Because patient care is the most important thing for us.” Albert Maringer from the ÖGK also praises the project: “It enables us to quickly continue to ensure high-quality basic services in Wels.”
