The 35-year-old was under contract with German Bundesliga club Augsburg until the end of the previous season; his last appearance was on April 29th in the 1-1 draw against Eintracht Frankfurt. He then had to take a break due to a knee injury. In recent years, Baumgartlinger has repeatedly had to struggle with injuries.
The midfielder played for 1860 Munich from 2001, followed by stints at Austria Vienna (2009 – 2011), Mainz (2011 – 2016), Bayer Leverkusen (2016 – 2022) and most recently Augsburg. The father of the family is currently working as an expert at Sky and is also completing training in sports management.
The ÖFB will officially say farewell to the long-time captain before the international match against Germany in the Happel Stadium on Tuesday. Baumgartlinger took part in two European Championships (2016, 2021) and, with 84 international matches, is number eight in the all-time ÖFB appearances list.
He made his debut on September 9, 2009 in a 1-1 draw against Romania in the World Cup qualifiers in Bucharest, and he played his last international match at the 2021 European Championship in a 3-1 win against North Macedonia. Baumgartlinger’s only national team goal came in a 2-1 friendly win against the Czech Republic in Olomouc on June 3, 2014.
