According to the UN environmental organization UNEP, which organized the conference, there are still many unanswered questions. However, they have at least agreed on a starting point for what is now the fourth round of negotiations, which is scheduled to take place in Ottawa, Canada in April 2024. “The braking maneuvers and resistance from oil-producing states such as Saudi Arabia, Russia and Iran have cost a lot of time and brought negotiations to an almost complete standstill,” the WWF said.

In March 2022, representatives of the UN member states decided to seek a global agreement on dealing with plastic. It should set binding measures for the entire life cycle of plastics – from the quantities produced to the design of plastic products to the disposal and recycling of plastic waste.

After meetings in Uruguay and France, the third of five rounds of negotiations took place in Kenya last week. The final and fifth round of negotiations is planned for November and December 2024 in Korea. The aim was to pass an agreement by mid-2025.
