380 people died on Austria’s roads this year

In the comparable period of 2022 there were 358 traffic deaths, in 2021 – at that time there were still temporary and regional exit and traffic restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic – 345. For comparison: in the entire pre-Corona year of 2019 there were 416 deaths. And 369 traffic deaths in all of 2022 were the third lowest number of fatalities since 1950, according to the ministry.

The number of victims was particularly high in Styria

According to the Interior Department, there was a particularly large increase in Styria this year – from 47 fatalities in the comparable period of 2021 to 77 so far this year. In Burgenland, the number of traffic deaths has more than doubled in the period in question – from eight in the second Corona year to currently Already 19. According to the final figures, Salzburg recorded 23 deaths from the beginning of the year to December 10, 2021, 19 last year and 35 this year. In Tyrol, too, the death toll rose from 28 back then to 35 deaths so far this year. In Lower Austria there were 87 deaths in the comparable period of 2021, 95 in the previous year and 91 this year.

In four federal states, however, the numbers are currently declining: Carinthia counted 36 deaths in road traffic from January to December 10, 2021 and 28 so far this year. However, according to the Interior Ministry, in 2022 there were “only” 19 victims. In Upper Austria 88 people died in the comparable period of 2021, 77 the following year and 73 so far this year. The data for Vorarlberg remained stable, with 13 victims in 2021, 14 the following year and twelve so far this year. In Vienna, the statistics show 15 deaths for the comparison period in 2021, 17 in the following year and ten traffic deaths this year.

Last week, four people – two car drivers, a car passenger and a pedestrian – died in three traffic accidents. Two of the road users died on a motorway and one each on a state road B and on a state road L, two people in Lower Austria and one each in Upper Austria and Styria.

The number of traffic deaths in Germany is falling

According to estimates by the Federal Statistical Office, the number of traffic deaths in Germany will decrease slightly this year compared to last year, reported the German Press Agency (dpa). According to estimates based on available data for the period from January to September 2023, the number of people killed in road traffic will fall by almost 40 to around 2,750 compared to 2022. Last year, 2,788 people were killed in traffic in Germany. This means that the number of road deaths in the neighboring country is above the historic low of 2,562 people killed in 2021, but well below the pre-Corona level in 2019, when 3,046 people died in road traffic, the authority announced on Monday.
