The drive technologies for future BMW vehicles are developed in the development center of the BMW engine plant in Steyr. In addition to the further development of diesel engines, emission-free drive types such as electromobility play a central role, the group announced in a press release: In 2023 alone, 23 million euros were invested in the transformation of the development center, especially in new test benches and the most modern measurement technology – for example in one Roller dynamometer on which the acoustic emissions of the entire electric drive train in the vehicle can be measured. Thermal management for all new BMW electric vehicles is also being developed in Steyr. Currently, 55 percent of the development center’s 700 employees are already researching electromobility topics.

“In 2023, the BMW Group brought 24 new vehicles onto the market. The development center team was involved in over 60 percent of these launches,” says Josef Honeder, head of the development center. With the 5 Series Touring, the next BMW with a lot of know-how from Austria is already in the starting blocks. The station wagon is scheduled to come onto the market in spring.
