The owner, a 41-year-old Georgian, was traced. It was unclear why the dog was able to run away, according to police.
The dog squad officers first tried to attract or calm the extremely shy fox terrier in order to catch him, but they were unsuccessful. The dog then ran through several alleys in the direction of Schippergasse, sometimes also on the road, which meant that some vehicles had to slow down or take evasive action.
However, the officers managed to catch the dog in the Schippergasse area. Due to a massive defensive reaction, the terrier slipped out of his loose collar and bit a police dog handler on the hand. After the chip was read, the three-year-old dog was handed over to the animal rescue. The injured police officer had to be treated in a hospital. The dog owner was reported. Why or how the dog escaped is the subject of an investigation.
