Illegal pastry chef earned 72,000 euros with cakes – and received emergency aid

The Upper Austrian earned tens of thousands of euros with elaborately decorated cakes.

The woman sold at least 806 cakes and earned around 72,000 euros. She has also been receiving unemployment benefits and emergency assistance on a permanent basis since the beginning of 2022. According to the Upper Austrian Employment Service (AMS), she illegally received around 16,882 euros, the Ministry of Finance announced in a press release on Sunday.

“No trivial offenses”

The 31-year-old is waiting for reclaims of the AMS support she wrongly applied for. The financial police also filed a report of fraud with the public prosecutor’s office and with the tax office for tax evasion. “Such cases are not trivial offenses and damage the principles of a fair economy and a solidarity-based society,” said Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP).

90 euros per cake

The financial police became aware of an advertisement that referred to the woman’s Instagram account. There she posted 806 pictures to promote her cakes. The platform also offered the option to place orders via direct message. The illegal confectioner collected 90 euros per cake. These were elaborate creations, including wedding cakes or themed cakes in the shape of unicorns or footballs.
