Number of eviction executions increased again in 2023

The number of eviction notices, court dismissals and eviction executions actually carried out were queried.

This is shown by the answer to a parliamentary question from the SPÖ by Justice Minister Alma Zadic (Greens). After the pandemic, the numbers rose again to 8,600, only to grow further to 10,100 in 2023. But that is still significantly fewer than in 2018 and 2019 (just over 12,000 each), before Corona.

The number of eviction notices, court dismissals and eviction executions actually carried out were queried. While the number of terminations fell with the pandemic and continued to trend downwards afterwards, the picture is different when it comes to eviction proceedings and executions. There, the almost identical values for 2018 and 2019 fell sharply in the Corona years. From 2022 onwards there was an increase again, which continued in 2023 – but the values in both categories are still significantly below those of 2018 and 2019.

For example, just over 12,000 eviction executions were carried out in 2018 and 2019. This value fell to 8,300 in 2020 and to 6,900 in 2021. In 2022 the numbers rose again to 8,600 and continued to grow to 10,100 in 2023. It is currently unclear whether this trend will continue – but in 2023 the number of evictions was constant across all four quarters. After a decline in the second and third quarters of 2023, the number of eviction notices increased again in the fourth quarter.

The type of properties that are evicted is not broken down in the statistics – this includes apartments as well as business premises and offices. The reason for termination and the type of object are not recorded in the judicial process automation, according to the answer to the query. To do this, you would have to evaluate all the files manually.

During the Corona pandemic, rent deferrals were granted and evictions were postponed due to unpaid apartment rents. These measures have now expired. Afterwards, the so-called housing umbrella was launched – this is aimed at people who have rent arrears.
