It is thanks to the Haslau, Zell am Moos and Tiefgraben fire departments that the full fire in a so-called “forwarder” did not spread to the surrounding forest on Tuesday morning. The agricultural implement – similar to a tractor – started burning in the morning while working in the forest.
The worker, who was working alone, did everything he could to contain the flames. Because he had no cell phone reception in the dense forest, he was initially on his own. The man tried to put out the fire using a water bottle and jacket. When attempts to extinguish the fire had no effect, he ran across the forest down a steep slope to get a fire extinguisher from his car.
“Extreme physical effort”
With the fire extinguisher under his arm, he climbed back up the slope and continued to fight the vehicle fire. “Despite his extreme physical effort, the driver was unable to prevent the forwarder from catching fire,” reported Christian Stoxreiter from the Mondsee fire department. For the second time in a few minutes, the driver ran to his car and drove out of the forest until he had reception and could raise the alarm.
