Vegetable oil instead of diesel: Wolfgangseeschifffahrt and Schafbergbahn have switched to organic fuel and, according to their own statements, have reduced their CO2 emissions by 90 percent.
Salzburg AG, as the owner of the two tourism businesses, relies on Hydrotreated Vegetable Oils (HVO), which are hydrogenated vegetable oils. “We have been testing the fuel since last summer and are satisfied with it,” says managing director Mario Mischelin. “With the new fuel we also reduce our engine noise and the fuel is also biodegradable. The switch will not bring us any financial benefits, but we are convinced that the long-term environmental impact will be worth it.” Further measures to save CO2 are being worked on.
The Wolfgangseeschifffahrt and the Schafbergbahn together cover more than 100,000 kilometers each year. Both systems transport almost a million people.
