The woman who wanted to climb the 1,262 meter high mountain via the via ferrata, which was rated D/E as very difficult, may have misjudged her fitness level. Just a few hours earlier – as reported – there had also been a rescue operation on another via ferrata in the Salzkammergut: On the Laserer Alpine via ferrata on the Vorderen Gosausee, a 38-year-old German did not dare go forward or back. The man was freed from his predicament by Gosau mountain rescue workers.

Accidents and rescue missions occur again and again on the extremely popular Mahdlgupf via ferrata. The reasons for this are often overconfidence or poor preparation. In March of this year, a 31-year-old German had to be rescued after he mistook the via ferrata for a hiking trail, despite the very challenging entry point. In October of the previous year, a 43-year-old fell 10 to 15 meters while getting onto the key point of the path and sustained such serious injuries that he had to be flown to a hospital in an emergency helicopter.
