The woman who wanted to climb the 1,262 meter high mountain via the via ferrata, which was rated D/E as very difficult, may have misjudged her fitness level. During the climb, the woman, who was traveling with two companions, ran out of energy. According to police, she briefly lost her footing and fell into her via ferrata set, but was uninjured.

Emergency call after four and a half hours

After a good four and a half hours in the wall, she made an emergency call. Using dew rescue, the air police helicopter took the climber off the mountain and brought her unharmed to the valley. After rescuing their mountain comrade, her two companions continued to climb to the summit, the police said in the evening.

Just a few hours earlier – as reported – there had also been a rescue operation on another via ferrata in the Salzkammergut: On the Laserer Alpine via ferrata on the Vorderen Gosausee, a 38-year-old German did not dare go forward or back. The man was freed from his predicament by Gosau mountain rescue workers.

Accidents and rescue missions occur again and again on the extremely popular Mahdlgupf via ferrata. The reasons for this are often overconfidence or poor preparation. In March of this year, a 31-year-old German had to be rescued after he mistook the via ferrata for a hiking trail, despite the very challenging entry point. In October of the previous year, a 43-year-old fell 10 to 15 meters while getting onto the key point of the path and sustained such serious injuries that he had to be flown to a hospital in an emergency helicopter.

Entry point tightened

The difficult point at the entrance – climbers have to overcome a small overhang as a kind of test – has only been around for a few years. The start of the climb was tightened after numerous rescue operations “in order to prepare the climbers for the difficulties that would later follow and thus to curb overconfidence to some extent,” as Werner Schnetzer, chairman of the construction and maintenance association “Klettersteig Mahdlgupf”, said at the time .
