Three of the eight steles along the new memorial path on the Ennsleite have already been destroyed or damaged beyond repair in the past few weeks. “I have filed a report. I fear a right-wing extremist motive behind these acts,” says Steyr SP chairwoman and city councilor Katrin Auer.
The memorial plaques were designed with great attention to the historical details surrounding the February battles of 1934. “The Road to February 1934” shows a unique reappraisal of regional social history. At that time, workers opposed fascism in the fight for democracy and freedom. The circular route was opened this year at the memorial event on February 12th.
“I really hope that the perpetrator or perpetrators can be held responsible,” says Auer. One board fell victim to vandalism in mid-April, the other two around Pentecost.
