At 35, Marko Arnautovic is no longer the youngest, as he proved with his two goals for Inter Milan in the 2-2 draw against Hellas Verona, but the striker is still one of Austria’s hopes at the European Football Championship.

The downside is that several key players in the ÖFB squad are injured, especially David Alaba. The Real star will not be fit in time after tearing his cruciate ligament.
“We will miss David. Everyone knows what I think of David,” Arnautovic told “Ö3”. “He is very important to us, even if he cannot help us on the pitch.”
As team boss Ralf Rangnick explained when announcing his preliminary squad, he wanted to take Alaba with him to the Euros in Germany as a non-playing captain. Arnautovic welcomes this idea: “He (Alaba; note) will be there and will be very important for the team.”
Marko Arnautovic hopes for a lot of playing time under Ralf Rangnick
Arnautovic is not without some insults, of course. When asked whether Alaba would also act as the 35-year-old striker’s boss, Arnautovic replied with a laugh: “No, he can be the boss at home, but not at my place. It’s not possible just because of the age difference.”
It is still unclear what role Arnautovic will play in Rangnick’s considerations. Michael Gregoritsch recently made it into the ÖFB starting line-up thanks to numerous goals. It is clear that Arnautovic is nevertheless hoping to play a lot at the European Championships: “I am the kind of player who, when he is with the team or the national team, always wants to play.” Ultimately, of course, the team manager makes the decision.
“I’m here,” Arnautovic added, “I will help the team and I expect to play.”
It is also unclear which club Arnautovic will play for next season. The Viennese is said to be about to leave Inter. His recent goals serve as a recommendation for other clubs. In the 2-2 (2-2) draw at Verona, he was allowed to play from the start for only the fifth time this season in the league – and thanked championship coach Simone Inzaghi with goals in the tenth minute and in injury time of the first half.
The league season ended Arnautovic with five goals, and Austria’s record international player was successful twice in the Champions League. The 20th championship title for Inter, the second for Arnautovic with the Milanese after 2009/10, when he was a young reserve, had already been decided since April. In the end, the “Nerazzurri” were a full 19 points ahead of their city rivals AC Milan.
