In the new traffic education garden, children can practice correct behavior in traffic in a safe environment.

Safe behavior in traffic is something that needs to be learned. The new bicycle traffic education garden in the middle of the residential area in the garden city in Wels offers children the best practice conditions. In pouring rain, the 300,000 Euro project was opened in the Friedenspark today, Tuesday, with Wels schoolchildren.

The girls and boys can practice realistic traffic situations in a safe environment. The most important traffic signs are set up on the asphalted cycle track with a fence on Sauerbruchstrasse. The young cyclists can practice how to behave in a roundabout, in front of pedestrian crossings and bicycle crossings. “From next year, the police will also be conducting the bicycle tests here,” announced Mobility Councillor Stefan Ganzert (SP). This year, the test will take place again on the exhibition grounds.

120 children failed cycling test in Wels

Last year, 353 fourth-graders from twelve schools in Wels passed the practical bicycle test. 120 children failed the first time, and 46 children passed the theoretical test but did not even take the practical test. “85 percent passed the re-test,” says Chief Inspector Andreas Weidinger, who advises parents to practice with their children in the new traffic education garden. The new practice area is intended to help reduce the failure rate in the future.

The main sponsor and namesake is the Kiwanis Club Wels, which co-financed the first Wels traffic kindergarten 50 years ago.

“In order to achieve the mobility transition and increase the share of bicycle traffic, children must learn to ride a bike and do it,” says Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP). As reported, Wels wants to double the share of bicycle traffic to 20 percent by 2030.

Bicycle bridge and two cycle paths

This requires further expansion of the cycle paths. The largest project is the pedestrian and cycle path bridge over the Traun to Schleißheim, construction will begin in the autumn.

Construction has been underway since April on the new cycle path on Vogelweiderstrasse, which will close the gap between Römerstrasse and Billrothstrasse. The total cost of the 335-metre-long cycle path is budgeted at 700,000 euros, which will be shared between the state of Upper Austria and the city of Wels. The new cycle path is due to be completed in October.

Work on the cycle path on Roseggerstrasse (from Ringstrasse to Maximilianstrasse) is expected to start in mid-July. The cost is around 390,000 euros.
