However, it was the first time that the bird flu virus was found in alpacas. This camel species is actually native to the South American Andes and is kept primarily for its thick, soft wool. In recent weeks, H5N1 has been found in more than 50 species of animals in the USA. Dairy cows have been affected, among others. Two people who work on farms also contracted bird flu. Their illness was mild, however.

Last week, the US health authority CDC announced that it was expecting further infections, but that the risk to humans was currently low. Infections in humans are still rare and no human-to-human transmission has been detected so far. However, experts are concerned that more and more mammal species are being infected by the bird flu pathogen. The further spread of the virus could therefore lead to it mutating into a variant that can also be transmitted from person to person.
