Specialist retail centres are an “underestimated giant” in Austria, but like the rest of the retail sector, they are struggling with increasing vacancies. This is what Roman Schwarzenecker, Managing Director of Standort + Markt, says. The consultant conducted a study this week to determine the status quo and potential of specialist retail centres.
There are 289 so-called agglomerations with 8,770 specialist retail units in Austria. Schwarzenecker defines agglomerations as specialist retail centres and their surroundings on the outskirts of towns.
According to Standort + Markt, 26.7 percent of the entire domestic purchasing power potential in retail now flows into the locations. This corresponds to a sales volume of 19.1 billion euros. By comparison: In traditional shopping centers, this figure is 22.6 percent of the purchasing power potential.
The most recent survey of retail parks was carried out in 2021/22. Compared to that time, the number of agglomerations recorded increased by nine. However, the area decreased slightly. In total, it extends over more than 1,000 football fields.
