Orsi, Gurméndez and Mieres advance in a national pact for security

The presidential candidates Yamandu Orsi (Wide Front), Gabriel Gurmendez (Colorado Party) and Pablo Mieres (Independent Party) agreed to work on a great national pact for security, reported the former president of Antel.

“If we do not do this, there may come a time when instead of assigning responsibility to some, they do it with the political system and the democracy. The day that Uruguayans are willing to give up freedoms and rights for fear of going out into the streets, we would be in a worse place,” Gurméndez said and added: “the day that Uruguayans are willing to give up freedoms and rights for fear of going out into the streets, we would be in a worse place.

The Colorado Party candidate assured that they have already spoken with Orsi and Mieres to create a “national agreement” around security. The issue, which is the greatest concern of Uruguayans (53%), monopolized the political debate less than a month before the internal elections after the brutal quadruple crime in the Maracaná neighborhood last Thursday.

Gurméndez demanded that the leaders have “the political maturity to find minimum agreements” and hopes that other presidential candidates will join in.

Meanwhile, the president Luis Lacalle Pou He meets this Tuesday with all his ministers in the Executive Tower with the theme of insecurity in the background.

The debate around the problem heated the last days of the electoral campaign, mostly around the proposal of the white candidate Jorge Gandini to add the military in patrol tasks and security citizen.

It was harshly questioned by right and left. The Broad Front Carolina Cosse considered the initiative “nonsense”, while the leader of Open Town Hall (CA), Guido Manini Ríosassured that “it is inappropriate” and demanded “responsibility” on the part of the actors who promote these ideas.
