Austria’s national football team will travel to EURO 2024 without Stefan Lainer, Thierno Ballo and Tobias Lawal. The ÖFB announced this on Friday afternoon. A few hours earlier it had already been announced that goalkeeper Alexander Schlager had not yet recovered from his knee injury and would not be able to play in the finals in Germany. The final 26-man squad includes 23 field players – including the fit Gernot Trauner – and three goalkeepers.

Mönchengladbach right-back Lainer was a fixture in the starting lineup at the European Championships three years ago. Last July, the Salzburg player was diagnosed with early-stage lymph node cancer – the treatment worked well, Lainer returned to team training the following November and made his ÖFB comeback in March of this year in the 2-0 win in Slovakia.

For WAC attacker Ballo, the nomination for the main squad alone was a surprise. Ultimately, it wasn’t enough to get a ticket to the European Championships. The 22-year-old, who like Lawal has not yet played a senior international match, will travel directly to the ÖFB U21 team. Rangnick informed the trio on Friday after training and before their departure to Switzerland, where the EURO dress rehearsal will take place in St. Gallen on Saturday. “I’m not looking forward to it, and I don’t think any of my team boss colleagues are looking forward to having these kinds of discussions,” the 65-year-old said at the final press conference on the subject.
