When the Linz musical ensemble was on stage, a young couple from Vienna attracted everyone’s attention: Hedwig Königseder and Vincenz Dörner became the secret stars on the dance floor. The 17-year-old schoolgirl and the 19-year-old student were swept away by the exuberant atmosphere in Vienna’s town hall. The teenagers have already attended more than ten balls this year alone, and the Upper Austrian ball was a first for them. “We are thrilled at how much Upper Austrians love to dance. At the other balls, the dance floor was nowhere near as full,” said the couple.
Tradition and costume
Like most of the other guests, the two of them came to the Upper Austrian Ball in traditional costume, which was held in the federal capital for the 121st time on Saturday evening. The state rooms and the arcade courtyard of the town hall were filled with almost 3,000 visitors. Among them were numerous Viennese by choice with Upper Austrian roots. Around 75,000 Upper Austrians now live in the capital, Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig reminded everyone. One of them is his wife, by the way.

A piece of home around the corner
“Once an Upper Austrian, always an Upper Austrian,” said Susanne Fleck, who “emigrated” several years ago. The evening felt “like a piece of home around the corner.” At the same time, it offered the unique opportunity to meet the Linz musical stars. A souvenir photo and an autograph made the Upper Austrian beam. “My friends and I like to go to the music theater in Linz. Today the musical stars came to us. That’s something really special.”
Casual atmosphere
Helena Budin and her mother Aban from Vienna also regularly make trips to Upper Austria. They are particularly impressed by the landscape and the peace and quiet of the Mühlviertel. So the women from Iran put on their dirndls on Saturday evening and – accompanied by a friend from Jamaica – enjoyed the Upper Austrian company in the ballroom.
With pleasant summer temperatures, the ball also took place outdoors. That is what makes the Upper Austrian Ball so special: the mixture of pomp, tradition and a summery, relaxed atmosphere. For the young dance couple Hedwig Königseder and Vincenz Dörner, one thing is clear: “We will definitely be back next year.”
