Tourists who have fines in Uruguay must pay them before leaving the country

Tourists who have violations for speeding will have to pay the fines before leaving the country, according to the new regulations set out by the Executive power and signed by the president Luis Lacalle Pou.

According to a government provision signed last week by the president, tourists visiting the Uruguay and commit a traffic violation related to speeding, they will be required to pay for it before leaving the country.

The regulation will be implemented in the coming weeks and involves a change in the previous system, which depended on the foreign offender’s willingness to pay the fine or not.

Payment for fines can be made in three ways: through the application of the Single Vehicle Entry Collection System (Sucive), through the web or through any collection network at all authorized points within Uruguay. However, the regulations allow each departmental government to determine whether to add other forms of payment.

New amount for fines

In addition to forcing tourists to pay for their violations, the new regulations establish a new amount of traffic violations for speeding on national routes, rising to a minimum total of 17,252 pesos, that is, about $440.

Meanwhile, the only vehicles exempt from fines are ambulances, although they must be properly registered and providing a service at the time the violation occurs.

In that sense, each agency that has the power to apply fines can have the requirements to exempt each particular medical case.

Speeding fines almost doubled in 2023

Data from Single Vehicle Revenue Collection System (Sucive) indicated that 200,000 more fines were made than in 2022, adding a total of 448,114 during last year throughout the Uruguay.

Of that total, the department with the most fines was Montevideo with a total of 225,245 violations. This is followed by Maldonado with 114,444 and cannelloni with 41,595 fines for speeding. Meanwhile, the department of Artigas He was the only one who did not fine any citizen for speeding.

In this sense, it is estimated that the total raised – between paid and pending violations – rise to a total of 3,500 million pesos, according to El País. Meanwhile, it is expected that this year the number of fines and their collection will remain at a similar level.
