After a two-story wooden hut of those activists who protested against the construction of the Lobau tunnel, which has now been stopped, caught fire in Vienna on Friday, the police are now investigating in all directions. According to a police broadcast, the investigators are currently assuming arson.
At the time the fire broke out, eight people were in the hut on Hirschstettner Strasse in the Donaustadt. They tried to fight the flames with fire extinguishers. At around 2 a.m., they called the fire department. “Since it was a wooden building, it quickly caught fire and then collapsed,” said a fire department spokesman.
The fire investigators of the Vienna police started their work that night. Some of those present had seen a cyclist and noticed accelerators near the flames.
Allegations against Ludwig
The hut stood on one of the two areas that the activists are currently keeping occupied. After the end of the Lobau tunnel, they also want to prevent the construction of the so-called city road, which is to connect the Seestadt with the southeast bypass.
For those who were present at the attack in the hut – some are only 16 and 17 years old – the campaign “Lobau stays!” psychological help ready. Lena Schilling, a spokeswoman for the cast, criticized the Mayor of Vienna Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) yesterday. This has not yet condemned the life-threatening act. “The fact that Mayor Ludwig is playing down this terrible violence makes us stunned,” says Schilling. A spokesman for Ludwig rejected the allegation that the mayor had not played down the incident.
