This is according to data published by Statistics Austria on Tuesday. Accordingly, the number of newly registered electric cars fell by 5.1 percent, or around 1,200, to 22,178. Conventionally powered cars saw 73,065 new registrations, an increase of 6.8 percent.
The positive balance in the first half of the year was due to advance purchases in June. “The mandatory fitting of new cars with advanced driver assistance systems as of July 6th led to an increase in first-time car registrations of more than a quarter compared to June of the previous year,” explained Statistics Austria General Director Tobias Thomas in a press release.

Among conventionally powered vehicles, 46,395 petrol cars were registered in the first half of the year, an increase of 7.6 percent, and diesel cars saw an increase of 5.5 percent, or 26,670 registrations. Among alternatively powered cars, 32,385 petrol hybrids (plus 18.5 percent) and 7,473 diesel hybrids (minus 1.3 percent) were newly registered.
Of all new car registrations in the first half of the year, the majority (69 percent) were registered by legal entities, companies and local authorities, while 31 percent went to private vehicle owners. For electric cars, the proportion of private owners is even lower at just under a quarter.
Most new VW registrations
Looking at the various brands, VW had the most new registrations with a share of 15.5 percent, followed by Skoda (8.9 percent), BMW (7 percent), Audi (6 percent) and Seat (5.7 percent). The statisticians registered more new car registrations for Dacia (plus 24.5 percent), VW (plus 12.2 percent), Toyota (plus 10.4 percent), BMW (plus 9.2 percent), Seat (plus 8.1 percent), Hyundai and Mercedes (both plus 3.5 percent). In contrast, there were fewer new registrations for Tesla (minus 9.3 percent), Audi (minus 7.2 percent) and Skoda (minus 2.9 percent).
Automobile importers were generally pleased with the figures, but did not want to give an exact forecast for the year as a whole due to advance purchases. They are at least convinced that the new requirements will not put additional pressure on the trade. “Overall, we expect a flat but constantly rising curve in new registrations until the end of the year,” said Günther Kerle, chairman of the Austrian automobile importers in a press release.
