The Broad Front will question Mides about the death of a teenager from INAU

The Senate bench of the Broad Front (FA) will question in the Parliament to the authorities Ministry of Social Development (You measure) for the death of a 16-year-old teenager shortly after giving birth, who was under the protection of the Institute for Children and Adolescents of Uruguay (INAU) in the department of Rivera.

The teenager, who had been a victim of sexual exploitation, died in May and became INAU’s first case of maternal death in 2024.

This Tuesday, at a press conference, the FA Senate confirmed that they submitted a request for an interpellation to the head of Mides, Alejandro Sciarra, as well as to INAU authorities.

The senator Jose Carlos Mahiaexplained that the motion to question the authorities responds to the effects of “analyzing and assuming responsibilities for what is happening in the country and in the national system of protection of girls, boys and adolescents.”

Meanwhile, his peer Silvia Nane He commented that “the situation of children and adolescents in our country is an issue that has become more complex.”

Concern over the increase in adolescent violence

“If we take into account some indicators, such as the numbers of violence in the Sipiav —Comprehensive System for the Protection of Children and Adolescents—, we have that from 4,911 situations that we had in 2020, the increase has been truly terrifying, because in 2021 we went to 7,035, in 2022 to 7,473, and in 2023 we closed at 8,157,” he continued.

“These are situations, not complaints, they are situations that have a name, surname and identity card,” lamented the senator. In turn, she indicated that entering the INAU special protection system for reasons poverty increased from 10.7% to 20.4% in the second half of 2023.

He also stated that the State “is not being able to exercise its role in protecting the exercise of a life free of the right to violence” in these cases of “serious” violations.
