More than 99 percent of employees in the state of Washington voted in favor of the strike, the IAM union announced on Wednesday (local time). Bad decisions by the company’s management are endangering the employees’ livelihood, it said. The union is demanding a 40 percent pay increase.

These are the first comprehensive negotiations with the aircraft manufacturer in 16 years. However, a strike cannot begin until the current collective agreement expires on September 12. Boeing employs more than 66,000 people in the US state of Washington who work on programs such as the MAX series wide-body aircraft, the 767 and the 777. They make up the largest share of the company’s global workforce.
Security issues, whistleblowers and lawsuits
The threatened work stoppage exacerbates an already strained situation for the US aircraft manufacturer, which is already struggling with safety problems, market share losses and legal consequences. The Airbus rival is in a crisis that was exacerbated by the January 5 incident in which part of the cabin wall on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX came loose during flight. The aircraft manufacturer is also battling other problems, including impending fines in connection with two fatal crashes of 737 MAX aircraft that killed 346 people.
