In his first speech as Republican US vice presidential candidate, JD Vance presents himself as a man from a humble background. “I grew up in Middletown, Ohio,” said the 39-year-old at the Republican Party convention in Milwaukee on Wednesday evening (local time). “In a small town where people spoke their minds, worked with their hands and loved God, their family, their community and their country with all their hearts.” But it was also a place that had been pushed aside and forgotten by “America’s ruling class in Washington.”

As in his bestseller “Hillbilly Elegy,” Vance spoke of his difficult family circumstances and thanked his mother, who was present in the hall and received great cheers.
