This was reported by Il Messaggero, an Italian daily newspaper, on Friday. It is unclear which wholesaler or retail chain will be awarded the contract to operate the supermarket.
The products in the “Annona”, where only Vatican employees are allowed to shop, are particularly cheap. This is possible because there is no VAT or alcohol, fuel or tobacco tax there. There could be a market distortion with regard to the surrounding Italian supermarkets if the supermarket is no longer only accessible to employees.
