It has now come to an end as surprisingly as it began in 2019. The Steel Wings surprisingly withdrew their entry in the Alps Hockey League on Monday. The players were informed of this on Monday after a board meeting.
The reasons for the withdrawal lie in the budget. A hole of around 200,000 euros is said to have already occurred last year. The budget for this season has been increased, but according to current calculations it is again not sufficient. In order not to endanger the Steinbach Black Wings, who finance the Steel Wings, this step is unfortunately unavoidable, it is said.
The timing of the announcement is, of course, strange. It will be particularly difficult for the players to find new teams a week before training starts. (Justified) criticism comes primarily from many parents. At the end of February, President Peter Nader emphasized in the Eisbrecher podcast how important a second team was – listen for yourself:

Only Salzburg still active in the Alps Hockey League
Linz is thus following a negative trend. Two years ago, the Vienna Capitals withdrew their Silver Caps from the Alps Hockey League. At the beginning of 2024, it was announced that Klagenfurt would no longer compete with the Future Team. After the withdrawal of the Steel Wings, only Red Bull Salzburg has a farm team in the ICE Hockey League.
