After his fifth place at the Summer Olympics in Paris, which ended at the weekend, discus thrower Lukas Weißhaidinger is on “home vacation” in Taufkirchen this week. “The atmosphere in Paris was simply unbelievable,” says Weißhaidinger in an interview with OÖNachrichten.
OÖN: A few days after the Olympic final in Paris. How are you feeling and how is your recovery going?
Lukas Weisshaidinger: The Olympic Games took a lot of mental energy. I’m now taking a few days’ holiday at home in Upper Austria. Luckily, the journey to the “home meeting” in Andorf next Saturday is not a long one. After that, things will get serious again in the Diamond League. I want to qualify for the final in Brussels on August 30 in Rome.
The Games in Paris were the third in your career. Regardless of the sporting outcome. How did you find the atmosphere in Paris compared to Tokyo and Rio?
The atmosphere in the Stade de France, which was filled to capacity, was simply incredible. The 70,000 spectators were incredibly loud, especially when the French were in action. It felt like the roof almost blew off. It was really cool. I had to look a little more closely than usual to find my fan club, my family and friends in the crowd. I really enjoyed that they were there. On Thursday evening we were together in the Austria House – eating schnitzel. As for the mood: I can’t blame myself. I was within striking distance, but this time I didn’t manage to pull off that perfect throw – most recently in Rome. I took a risk, but it didn’t work out. On the other hand: I can now boast of sixth place (Rio 2016), third place (Tokyo 2021) and fifth place (Paris 2024) in three Olympic appearances. Someone else will have to try and emulate me.
