The tenant poverty basket is $943,390.64, according to the Grouped Tenants report. It also shows that 1 in 4 renters had to move in the last 3 months for not being able to pay the new rental values. While 44.5% of income is dedicated to paying it.
To arrive at these percentages, Inquilinos Agrupados explained that “the calculation of the poverty index for tenant households was carried out, on the one hand, with the values of the Total Basic Basket (INDEC) added the rent and expenses for different types of households for the period of March 2024“. They were then compared with the values of Total Family Income collected by the Permanent Household Survey (INDEC) for the first quarter of 2024.

How the “Tenant Poverty Basket” is calculated
In a household with three members, the Total Basic Basket (in March 2024) reached 615,704.64 pesos; while the rent for a 2-room apartment (National Tenant Survey March 2024) was 241,561 pesos and the expenses were 86,125 pesos. This leaves the “Tenant Poverty Basket” at 943,390.64 pesos.
From this data, the poverty percentage of each tenant will depend on how many live in a home. If it is just one person, the number drops a little, to 72%. But if it is a family of 3 members, poverty reaches 80%. If there are four, the situation is even more difficult, 88%.
