Superman, Iron Man or Wonder Woman-if you go to the mainstream of the comic, you might think that it is only about characters that have (super) powers. The Nextcomic Festival, which is now in the final in Linz, has planned to show how “its” art can make strong – the audience and the creators of the genre.

The Upper Austrian Martina Löscher (26) says that she spoke a statement by the Jewish-Viennese comic artist Lily Renee (1921–2022) from her soul: pens, brushes and colors were “the means to survive” for the pioneer, who is one of the first women in the “Golden Age” (in the 1940s) of the US comics wrote. Renee War War Holocaust survivor, in 1939 she managed to escape from Vienna in a child transport. Later she learned sexism in the New York comic publishing house “Fiction House”.

When the thread tears

Martina Löscher, who comes from Stadl-Paura and studies at the Linz Kunstuni, recognizes itself in Renee because painting is also a “survival” for her: it has the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a rare disease of the connective tissue, which she usually binds to her home. Was known for her figure Senorita Rio, a Brazilian nightclub owner, spy and Nazi fighter, introduces Löscher in the Nextcomic mature, imaginative paintings, which celebrates cats, mushrooms with faces and unicorns in shining, often pastel colors. An exciting “trip” as in the Wonderland, who in the “Stretch the Lines” show – a homage to Renees defenders in the Ursulinenhof Linz (OÖ Kunstverein, EG, today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) – also works by Birgit Schweiger: The artist from the Innviertel is known for her drawing lines.
