Cycle through Austria without helpers: “The magic starts at 180 kilometers”

Linzin Barbara Than fell into the “Race Across Austria” fever last year and completed the 1000 km tour.

Have you been seriously thinking about walking through Austria by bike from north to south or from east to west? As quickly as possible, without unnecessary breaks and nap (nobody wants to talk about sleep in this context) and ultimately completely on their own. You are the team yourself, the necessary for such a tour, which for some would have to be called Tortur when reading, you have on the bike and the body.

It sounds like extremism if you only look at the sober key data of the “Race Across Austria North-South” in June, the “Self Supported Bicycle Race”. To pedal from 300 to 1000 kilometers, covering 4,000 to 14,000 meters of altitude – this exceeds even the imagination of sporting people.

Interested yes, but …

Then Barbara Than stands in front of a, 42 years old, with a smile on his face and with an enthusiasm to torture himself and raves. By chance – as usual – she stumbled into the circle of these “gladiators of cycling”. “I got the start number for the Linz marathon in spring last year and was drawn attention to the stand of” Race Across Austria “by a friend at the marathon fair,” recalls.

She was interested and deterred at the same time. At least over the 300 kilometers, she was able to imagine participation. “I found it a cool challenge, but I couldn’t imagine that in my head for a long time to be on the road for so long.” She has been on the racing bike for ten years, but she hadn’t brought it further than 150 kilometers.
