In the second story, the athlete’s mother was a tennis coach, but she never coached him. The boy swam, skied, skated, played basketball, tennis, soccer, and handball. Over time, he discovered that the sports he liked the most were those in which a ball intervened. His mother played tennis and his desire to win made him start to abandon all other sports, including soccer, a sport he loved. After thirty years, he was still number 1 in tennis, breaking all existing records to date.

The same result but two different ways to reach the top

Whereas Tiger always dreamed of winning all the tournaments, Roger instead, and in his words, dreamed of “sometime playing Boris Becker and participating in Wimbledon”. Thus, ¿What can they teach usAre these two stories?

If we relate them to the business world, we clearly see that there are two models or ways to reach the top:

On the one hand, Being a Tiger is about applying 10,000 hours of deliberate practice and focusing on hyper specialization.

Tiger Woods won a title again five years later.

Tiger Woods won a title again five years later.

Tiger Woods won a title again five years later.

On the other hand, being a Roger implies knowing different disciplines and then focusing on perfecting one or more of them with the aim of becoming a generalist expert.

If we take it to the sales area, we could think of two hypothetical types of profiles:

For example, Andrés and Sofia are sales specialists, they know all closing techniques, prospecting strategies and presentation of products and solutions and they focus more and more on continuing to perfect those techniques (Tiger model).

The second example, Martín and Gabriela who also know sales, study coaching, behavioral psychology and digital marketing (Model Roger).

In relation to these examples, we have seen that both models can achieve great results, but clearly, those (and in general they are the majority) that are “hybrids” in their choices of the role model will not arrive and this will lead them to stagnant careers and it will cause professional frustrations. Why can’t you be “a little bit Tiger” and “a little bit Roger”? That will be the card to failure.

Another analogy that can help to reinforce these two models is the matching games. chess and poker.

While chess basically requires many hours of study of moves, movement planning and strategy, poker requires human psychology, “Body Language”, shrewd playing cards, and decision-making skills to know when and how to bet.

While great chess champions have one or two superlative abilities, poker champions have 3-5 superlative abilities in different fields, not just in the game.

Your future depends purely and exclusively on your choice

In the next 10 years, We will see more successful Tigers and Rogers in all industries and professions so the sooner you choose your model, the faster you will reap early successes or “quick wins”.

We find ourselves in a changing world, unstable, disruptive, with “black swans”, unpredictable, where artificial intelligence and robotics will replace millions of jobs.

Conclusion, Who would you like to look more likes?: Tiger Woods or Roger Federer and whyIt’s. Any other option you choose seems doomed to professional failure.
