44 times gold, 38 times silver and 2 trophy wins – that is the proud result for the winegrowers from Styria. The Dubourdieu Trophy for the best Sauvignon Blanc of the competition is awarded to the Adam-Lieleg winery. With the Austria Revelation Trophy from Weingut Krispel, another trophy win goes into the green mark.
From March 14th to 16th, 2023, 1210 Sauvignon Blanc wines from all over the world competed for the coveted medals of the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon. 50 international tasters awarded silver and gold medals to wines from 20 different wine-growing nations. This year’s competition took place in Franschhoek, South Africa.
Overall, Styria is extremely successful: 82 medals and two trophies go to Styria this year. More than 42 percent of the submitted wines were awarded gold or silver. This means that a quarter of all gold medals awarded in the competition come from Styria. In the country ranking, Austria with 85 total medals (82 of them from Styria) is behind France with 115 medals.
Sauvignon Blanc in Styria
The aromatic Sauvignon Blanc finds ideal conditions on the steep hills of Styria in the heart of Europe. According to the wine register 2021, the Sauvignon Blanc, flagship variety and winner of many international wine awards, also tops the list of grape varieties in terms of area with 902 hectares (17.7 percent share of the total area).
The Styrian climate, the soil and the sites are very good for the grape variety, which is why Sauvignon Blanc has become increasingly important in recent years, as the top rankings that have just been achieved prove.
In 2024 Styria will host this internationally recognized competition.
