Humor helps
No, Alzheimer’s is not fun, and making fun of it doesn’t exactly show a fine character – unless your name is Stermann or Grissemann. In their special show, the cabaret artists manage to make the audience smile despite the seriousness of the topic and also provide a lot of information about the disease – about how it develops, but also about treatment and prevention. Currently, it is estimated that more than 130,000 people in Austria are affected by Alzheimer’s disease, and the number is rising rapidly. It is high time to bring the widespread disease “out of the dark hole of shame and taboo” – that is the goal of the two. Why not with humor? All I can say is: look at this!

Helmut Atteneder
Dementia is no joke
Do you know him? The doctor says to the patient: “You must be very strong now. You have testicular cancer and Alzheimer’s.” The patient says: “Thank God not cancer.” In principle, any awareness of dementia is important, but satire is only suitable for this to a limited extent. Even if the comparison is flawed, we know that satire shouldn’t be allowed to do everything, as we know from the consequences of denigrating symbols of faith and religious views. Dirk Stermann and Christoph Grissemann torture themselves in their special broadcast – why without an audience? – initially neat. Only when experts and those affected have their say does “Welcome Alzheimer’s” actually offer added value. The otherwise fine duo wouldn’t have been needed for that.
