More protection of minors

It is rightly said that the Internet is not a legal vacuum when it comes to online bullying or the sending of hate messages. Of course, this also applies to computer games, which not only but also appeal to a young, underage audience. There are already court rulings in Austria that classify gambling-like loot boxes in games like “FIFA” and “Counter Strike” as violations of Austrian gambling legislation. Greater attention should also be paid to child protection when it comes to payment modalities. Kids don’t need credit cards, they simply buy credit cards in the supermarket, which they can then spend on Steam or in the Google Store: in Austria from the age of 14.

individual responsibility

Be it “Fortnite”, “FIFA” or the recently released “Dragon’s Dogma 2”, hardly any game these days can do without additional paid content. The business of in-game purchases is too lucrative. Belgium already banned so-called loot boxes, i.e. in-game purchases with a gambling factor, in 2018. With little success, because according to a study from March 2023, more than 80 percent of the top-selling games still contained loot box offers. Instead of introducing a toothless law, the population should be informed about the danger of addiction and parents should be made to pay a little more attention to how their children spend their pocket money. This applies to both real and virtual life.
