At the same time, the maximum penalty will be three years’ imprisonment, with a ban on engaging in certain activities for up to six years.

The corresponding law was adopted by the State Duma on December 22 in the third, final reading. Two days later, it was approved by the Federation Council. Amendments are made to the Criminal Procedure and Criminal Codes of the Russian Federation.

The head of the Federation of Russian Car Owners, Sergei Kanaev, said on the same day that drivers, driving into the oncoming lane at high speed, risk their lives, as well as the lives of other road users. According to him, he has a positive attitude to the law.

The question of toughening punishment for reckless drivers was raised shortly after the resonant road accident that occurred in Moscow on November 20. On that day, three cars – Volvo, Mercedes and BMW collided on Kutuzovsky Prospekt, the latter was driven by blogger Magomedsaid Zainudinov, also known as Said Gubdensky. He and his passenger, President of the Federation of Automobile and Motor Sports of Dagestan Zaur Ibragimov, were killed. Two people were also injured – one from a Volvo car and one from a Mercedes.
