Buenos Aires will host a historical exhibition dedicated to the memory of the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasakiin commemoration of the 80 years that will be celebrated next year since these events occurred that marked a before and after in the history of humanity. The exhibition, which will take place from October 2 to November 3, 2024, is the first of its kind in Argentina and Latin America, after an edition in Brazil in 2008.
This exhibition is organized by the Ministry of Culture of the Nation of Argentina, the Sarmiento 151 Cultural Center, the City of Hiroshima and the City of Nagasaki. Since 1995, the exhibition has been held a total of 68 times in 58 cities in 20 countriesthe last one having been held in South America in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2008. For a month, attendees will be able to explore a deep reflection on the devastation caused by atomic bombs and their impact on future generations, as well as the importance of moving towards a “world free of nuclear weapons.”
Argentina and Japan are two of the main actors in the global discussion on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. Argentine figures such as Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, and Gustavo Zlauvinen, President of the Tenth Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), have been highlighted for their role in the matter. With this exhibition, we seek to continue promoting peace and raise awareness about the dangers of nuclear weapons.
An opportunity to connect generations
The exhibition will be composed of 30 photographic panels that document the horrors of the bombings, 20 personal objects of victims and survivors, audio-visual material, but it also highlights the visit and living testimony – unprecedented – of a survivor: Mrs. Teruko Yahatawho was only 8 years old when the bombing occurred in Hiroshima, the city where he lived with his family. In addition, parallel activities will be offered such as Origami workshops and the screening of films that portray the impact of horror.
