Undertaker admits to selling body parts without family consent

The funeral director pleaded guilty to defrauding family members of the deceased. Last Tuesday, a woman testified in court that she had sold parts of corpses that were to be cremated. Megan Hess owned a company based in the United States of America, Sunset Mesa, through which she sold skulls, arms and legs for surgical and educational purposes.

According to Reuters the woman confessed to the crime after being accused of fraud. Hess will be sentenced in January and prosecutors have said he faces twelve to fifteen years in prison.

To boost sales, Hess targeted poor families in the final days of their loved ones’ lives. Authorities also found that the woman forged dozens of body donor consent forms.

In the United States of America, the sale of organs such as the heart, kidneys, and tendons is prohibited. However, there is no law regulating the sale of corpses and body parts for educational or surgical purposes.
