Investigations: search for boat on Baltic Sea island not far from Nord Stream Pipelines

The investigation into the leak in the Nord Stream gas pipelines continues. Now the Danish authorities are looking for a boat.

Danish authorities have been searching for a boat on a Baltic island near the damaged Nord Stream gas pipelines for the past few months. As early as December, the police had inquired with the Christiansø island administration about a boat that was said to have moored there in September 2022, said Søren Thiim Andersen, the island’s administrator, in response to a request in connection with the Nord Stream investigation. The media had previously reported on investigations on the island.

The administration also helped with the search via Facebook at the beginning of January. The police were therefore looking for photos and videos from the port that came from September 16th to 18th, 2022. On January 18, the police also visited the island and visited people who replied to the posts. The administration also provided data from an online system used by skippers to make payments in port. Andersen does not know whether the authorities found the unspecified boat.

Christiansø is located northeast of the Baltic Sea island of Bornholm. Explosions under water occurred near Bornholm at the end of September. Both strands of the Nord Stream 1 pipeline and one strand of Nord Stream 2 leaked. ARD, SWR and the “Zeit” now reported that a group consisting of six people rented a yacht and probably then transported the explosives to the pipelines in the Baltic Sea. Two of the people have Ukrainian passports. However, a connection to government agencies cannot be established. Christiansø is also mentioned in the media reports. Accordingly, the boat in question should have appeared there.
