Additional requests of around 70 billion euros: Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner does not want to go into this – and once again refers to the debt brake.

According to Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner, no agreement has yet been reached in the traffic light coalition’s budget dispute. As the FDP chairman said on Wednesday evening on the ARD program “Maischberger”, there were individual talks with his ministerial colleagues. “And there is still no common understanding of the fiscal realities,” said Lindner.

There is a structural deficit in the budget despite record income. “And that’s why we now have budget deliberations ahead of us, which last took place in 2010.” In that year, the then black and yellow federal government agreed on a comprehensive austerity package at a budget meeting.

Originally, the key figures for the 2024 budget were to be decided in the cabinet on Wednesday. However, Lindner canceled the appointment because he could not agree with his colleagues. The ministers had announced additional requests of around 70 billion euros, for which the finance minister sees no leeway if the debt brake is adhered to and tax increases are avoided.
