Investigations: Students show the Hitler salute on a trip to Auschwitz

On an educational trip to the Auschwitz concentration camp, two students pose with the Hitler salute in a photo and share it on social media. Now the state security is investigating.

Two students from Leisnig (Middle Saxony district) are said to have shown the Hitler salute during an educational trip to the Auschwitz concentration camp. That is why state security is now investigating, as the Chemnitz police department informed on Monday on request.

Specifically, it is about a photo that, according to current knowledge, was taken on the evening of May 4th in a youth meeting center in Poland. Four students can be seen on it, two of whom show the Hitler salute, it said. Several media had previously reported on the incident.

After it was posted on a social media app, teachers took notice and asked students to delete it, police said. They also filed a complaint. The two 15-year-olds are now being investigated for using signs belonging to unconstitutional organizations.

The former Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz is seen around the world as a symbol of the Holocaust. The main camp was set up by the Germans in Oswiecim, Poland, in 1940, followed later by the Birkenau extermination camp. About 1.1 million people were murdered there, mostly Jews.
