Republicans: Presidential election: Trump shoots at rival DeSantis

Does Trump already feel restricted by his inner-party competitor? His latest statements suggest so.

Former US President Donald Trump used sharp words to attack US Republican Ron DeSantis – his most dangerous inner-party competitor in the 2024 presidential election.

“Instead of being grateful, DeSantis is now attacking the very man who saved his career,” said one of two videos Trump posted on Truth Social, an online platform he co-founded. Around the same time, DeSantis made his bid for the Republican nomination public on Twitter.

There is only one person who can make America great again, the video says – and his name is Donald Trump. During his time in the White House, he was already able to prove that.

Trump vs. DeSantis

DeSantis is governor of the US state of Florida and, according to polls, is currently the most promising Republican candidate alongside Trump. Trump was a kind of mentor for DeSantis years ago, now the 44-year-old is up against the 76-year-old ex-president.

Trump had already announced in November that he would enter the race for the 2024 presidential election. Republicans choose their candidate in a primary. Like Trump, DeSantis belongs to the right wing of the party and shares similar hard-line positions. However, he is less known for scandals, loss of control and political chaos than for being disciplined, sorted and considered.

In polls among Republicans about the possible candidates, DeSantis is currently well behind Trump. According to the TV station NBC, the governor wants to start a tour of states that are particularly important for the primaries next week.
